This week during PST bootcamp we’ve been training and discussing extensively on the topics of gender & development, safety & security, and Let Girls Learn (LGL). Jamaica is a Peace Corps focus country for LGL, which is a US program “employing a holistic approach to change the perception of the value of girls at the individual, community and institutional levels; foster an enabling environment for adolescent girls’ education; and engage and equip girls to make life decisions and important contributions to society”.
In Jamaica, men dominate the music industry, but in discussion with the language and culture staff we discovered that there are some fiery ladies in the Jamaican music scene as well. One of the women brought up as a prominent reggae and dancehall music artist in Jamaica was Tanya Stephens.
With all the discussion about gender, development, and empowering girls and young women this week it feels appropriate to kickoff my music spotlight posts while living pon di island with Tanya Stephens’ amazing music. Enjoy!
